CSP Practicum Site Visits

CSP Practicum Site Visits

This October, College Student Personnel (CSP) students, faculty, and practitioner-educators will visit multiple colleges and universities in Georgia to learn about student affairs and higher education at distinct institutional types. Site visits include the University of West Georgia, Georgia Institute of Technology (GA Tech), and Emory University.

These practicum visits are one of many program activities that combine peer-to-peer learning and professional socialization to provide graduates with practical experiences that are grounded in research and theory. Since the beginning of the College Student Personnel program over seventy years ago, more than 650 students have graduated and progressed to various roles in higher education and related services.

National Panhellenic Conference Graduation Rate Study

ELPS faculty Dr. Patrick Biddix and Dr. Terry Ishitani, along with ELPS alumnae Nicole Nicholson and Kaitlin Singer, completed and published a study that demonstrated women in sororities across 18 four-year institutions were more likely than non-members to graduate in four years, with the graduation rate between the two groups stabilizing for years five and six. Recommendations for practice to strengthen the educational component of sorority membership were also provided.

The article, “The Influence of National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) Sorority Membership on Graduation and Time-to-Degree: A Multi-Institution Study” was published in the Journal of Women and Gender in Higher Education (subscription required for access).

PERC Explores Policies that Promote Course Material Affordability

PERC Explores Policies that Promote Course Material Affordability

Mergers of major publishers and the ever-rising cost of course materials have catalyzed UT’s Postsecondary Education Research Center examination of policies  that promote course material affordability, namely through the use of Open Educational Resources (OER).

The Hewlett Foundation (hewlett.org) defines Open Educational Resources (OER) as “high-quality teaching, learning, and research materials that are free for people everywhere to use and repurpose.” In contrast to the restrictive copyright license tied to traditional course materials, authors of OER apply a “Creative Commons” (CC) license to their work that legally enforces free access and sharing. Similar to authors of traditionally copyrighted materials, credit is also given to authors of OER, with the added benefit that others may freely use, build upon, and enhance their work.

In addition to the PERC publication, ELPS PhD student and PERC research affiliate Elizabeth Spica recently presented on Best Practices and Institutional Models in textbook affordability during the June 2019 Textbook Affordability Summit hosted by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission in Nashville, TN.

Marisa Moazen named Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research & Engagement

Marisa Moazen, director, Office of Undergraduate Research at the University of Tennessee, has been named Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research & Engagement. Marisa is an alum of and adjunct assistant professor with the Higher Education Administration program in the department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. Congratulations to Dr. Moazen!

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Graduate Students Instrumental in Uniting Campus at the Rock

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Graduate Students Instrumental in Uniting Campus at the Rock

The College of Education, Health and Human Sciences has two graduate students who were instrumental in developing this year’s United at the Rock event. Two of our Educational Leadership and Policy Study students made this event their capstone project; a project which allow students to synthesize and apply skills and content from across the leadership curriculum and their primary academic discipline to research, design, critique alternatives, propose a solution, and effect change in a leadership challenge or community problem needing leadership.

This year, students Jessyca Ford and Elaina Emery, each took a portion of this project.  Ford tackled the task of getting the word out or the Word of Mouth Campaign so that everyone who wished could participate.  Emery was challenged with the task of organizing the Volunteer Fair for the event which included over 150 participants which she worked in collaboration with the Center for Leadership and Service.

Tanisha Jenkins, PhD student in Higher Education Administration at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, is featured as one of Knoxville News Sentinel’s “Top 40 under 40”. Her goal is to promote academic success, leadership development and equality for all students at UT. She is the Director of the Office of Multicultural Student Life and the Frieson Black Cultural Center.

Derrington Works With Scottish School Leaders in Glasgow

Mary Lynne Derrington, Associate Professor in the department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, was invited to work with Scottish school leaders on global perspectives of principal and teacher evaluation systems November 20-24, 2018. Following her presentation Supervising and Evaluating Principals:  Assisting with Challenges, she met with University of Glasgow academic staff, leadership programs heads, and national school inspectors in a discussion seminar. Later that day she met with principals and PhD students. Following a presentation, Supervising and Evaluating Teachers in an Era of Policy Mandates, there was a question and answer exchange.

While in Glasgow, Derrington also delivered two presentation at the Scottish Educational Research Association. Her presentation, Using Longitudinal Qualitative Research to Examine Change Over Time was based on her just released Sage Publications book. She also presented, with University of Glasgow faculty, in an invited seminar on Middle Leadership in Schools, the Critical Axis for Change and Improvement.

Flood, Higher Education PhD student, whose article “Student Transfer-Out Behavior at Four-Year Institutions” is listed first in the November 2018 issue of Research in Higher Education, one of the leading journals in the Higher Education field.
