Public Health is Everywhere!
Students have opportunities to integrate, synthesize and apply knowledge through cumulative and experiential activities that may include but are not limited to volunteering, internships, service-learning projects or research. Example ways that public health students gain experience outside of the classroom include:
- Join the UT Public Health Student Association (PHSA).
- Apply to be a Peer Educator in the VOLS 2 VOLS program at UT’s Center for Health Education and Wellness (CHEW)
- Apply to be a N.E.A.T. Educator with Knox County Health Department to teach nutrition and physical activity lessons to elementary school children in after-school sites
- Join the Tennessee Public Health Association (TPHA) for networking, professional development, and/or to present a poster or oral presentation.
- Join the UT Public Health Undergraduate Listserv to hear about more opportunities and stay up to date on public health opportunities.

- Certified in Public Health (CPH)
Professional credential available to graduates of a CEPH school or program of public health. Must pass CPH exam based on the five core areas of public health knowledge (biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, health policy and management, and social and behavioral sciences) in order to be certified. - Certified in Veterinary Preventative Medicine (DACVPM)
Professional credential available to individuals who hold both a DVM and MPH degree with concentration in Veterinary Public Health. A person with this certification is credentialed after demonstrating competency-based criteria established by the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicne (ACVPM). - National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc.
Professional credential available to anyone with a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher education, whose coursework reflects at least 25 semester hours in health education. Must pass the CHES exam based on the Seven Areas of Responsibility and Competency for Health Educators to be certified.
