Norma T. Mertz

Professor Emerita

Norma Mertz is Professor Emerita, Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. Retired after 45 years of service at the University of Tennessee, Mertz, a graduate of Teachers College, Columbia University, continues to teach the Values and Ethics in Leadership course for doctoral students.

Publications

Mertz is the co-editor (with Vincent Anfara) and contributor to heoretical Frameworks in Qualitative Research (2015, SAGE), and editor/contributor to Breaking into the All-Male Club: Female Professors of Educational Administration (2009, SUNY Press). Recent publications include a chapter in Women of Color in Higher Education: Contemporary Perspectives and New Directions, vol. 9, edited by. J.M. Gaetane and B. Lloyd-Jones, entitled, “Women of color faculty: Recruiting, hiring and retention”; a piece with S. L. Pfleeger in The Diversity Mentoring Casebook, edited by D. Clutterbuck and K.M. Poulsen, entitled “If everyone who makes it has a mentor, does everyone who has a mentor make it? Case study of a corporate mentoring project”; and, a portion in W. H. Sherman (Ed.), Disrupting the status quo? Young and new professors of educational administration, entitled “Then…and now: Reflections on women in educational administration.”

Mertz has also been published in the Journal of School Leadership, Urban Education, and Educational Administration Quarterly and has been a frequent presenter at AERA and ASHE.
