Karen D. Boyd

Professor of Practice Emerita

Karen D. Boyd is Professor of Practice Emerita of Higher Education and Leadership Studies in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) and ELPS’ former Director of Undergraduate Education.

Dr. Boyd came to UTK in the fall of 2012 to co-founded the Leadership Studies undergraduate program and served as its inaugural Coordinator until Fall 2024. She also held appointments to the Higher Education doctoral and masters programs where she taught history, student success, and ethics. Prior to joining the UTK faculty, Boyd held positions with increasing responsibility in university housing and student life (i.e., student conduct, support, organizations, etc.) at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Appalachian State University, Clemson University, East Carolina University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Carnegie Mellon.

Across her career, in and outside the classroom, Dr. Boyd explored ways to enhance student learning through the environments, programs, and personal relationships within her circle of influence. Can a student’s metacurricular experience in college, in and out of the classroom, set the stage for successful leadership later in life? And how can institutions best structure their programs, activities, services, resources, and student interactions to prepare self-authored personally and socially responsible leaders of tomorrow? These questions motivated Boyd’s practice and scholarship. Her experiences as a student, practitioner, teacher, and scholar leave her convinced that, if shaped properly, the student’s advised and supervised college involvements can serve and should be shaped as effective integrative learning environments cementing in graduates career ready self-authored personally and socially responsible leadership (i.e., institution-wide learning outcomes).
