Brandon W. Kliewer (Ph.D., University of Georgia) is an associate professor of civic and organizational leadership and coordinator of the leadership studies minor. Prior to joining ELPS in 2024, he was an associate professor of civic leadership and director of research and sponsored programs at the Staley School of Leadership at Kansas State University. Dr. Kliewer has maintained active partnerships with government, non-profit, and for-profit organizations to advance community-engaged scholarship, civic engagement, and leadership development programming. Notable highlights from the past include contributions to Points of Light, the Kansas Leadership Center, and the US Army Management Staff College. His research areas include civic and organizational leadership, leadership learning and development, and qualitative and community-engaged methods for applied social science research. His scholarly agenda is actively contributing to the field of Leadership-as-Practice and work-based leadership learning in civic and organizational contexts. His leadership development programming and associated research have received over $1.5 million in grants, contracts, and sponsored programs. The largest series of grants to date has been the Mandela Washington Fellowship, associated with the Young African Leaders Initiative, which is funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by IREX. The programming has led to subsequent research partnerships in Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, and Namibia that are advancing research on understanding culturally relevant leadership learning and building capacity to support cross-sector collaboration through civic leadership.
Dr. Kliewer has recent publications in New Directions in Student Learning, Gateways: International Journal of Community Research and Engagement, Adult Learning, the Journal of Leadership Studies, and the Journal of Nonprofit Education and Leadership. He currently serves on the Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement and the Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship editorial boards. Dr. Kliewer regularly teaches, undergraduate and graduate courses, related to civic and organizational leadership theory, the ethical dimensions of leadership and community engagement, leadership learning and development, and qualitative approaches to community-engaged scholarship and applied leadership and leadership learning research.
