HDFS Careers

April 29, 2025 by Shelby Jaco

When asking an undergraduate student, “What do you want to major in?” how often do you hear the response, “I’m not sure, but I know I want to help people”? Typically, this leads to suggestions of “helping professions” such as nursing, teaching, or first responders. However, does a major in Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) come to mind? What career opportunities do you associate with the title “Human Development and Family Science”?

Our HDFS program offers extensive opportunities for practical experience. We have established 62 partnerships in Knoxville, providing 77 potential placement locations for our mandatory practicum course. These placements span a diverse range of fields, including Assisted Living, Recreation, Animal Therapies, the State of Tennessee, Medical services (including Women and Infants Health), Adoption Agencies, Legal Resources, Education (including special education and adult education), Mentorship, and Outreach Resources such as Domestic Violence resource centers and Mental Health services.

Did you initially think there would be limited career options? Our goal is to broaden your perspective. In today’s job market and economy, it is advantageous to have a degree that allows for both specialization and diversification. We aim for our students to pursue their passions, no matter how specific, while also being adaptable to life’s varying circumstances. We strive to empower our students, ensuring their degree is fulfilling for them as individuals, and beneficial to families and communities.

“Individuals, families, and their communities” is a phrase you’ll find throughout the information we have posted about our department, and I think it’s a testament to our commitment to holistic education and community impact. This phrase encapsulates our mission to not only educate our students but also to empower them to make meaningful contributions to society. By focusing on the interconnectedness of individuals, families, and communities, we emphasize the importance of a comprehensive approach to human development and family science. Our goal is to prepare our graduates to address the diverse needs of the populations they will serve, fostering positive change and enhancing the well-being of all.

In conclusion, the Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) program offers a unique and impactful pathway for students who aspire to help others. By providing diverse practicum opportunities and emphasizing the interconnectedness of individuals, families, and communities, the program equips graduates with the skills and knowledge to make meaningful contributions across various fields. The HDFS degree not only fosters specialization but also encourages adaptability, ensuring that students are prepared to meet the evolving needs of society. Ultimately, the program’s holistic approach empowers students to pursue their passions while making a positive difference in the lives of those they serve. We hope you’ll join us.
