Cole Green Receives Yates Dissertation Fellowship 2025-2026

We are delighted to announce that Cole Green, one of our HDFS Ph.D. candidates, has been awarded the prestigious Yates Dissertation Fellowship. Established in June 2000 through a generous bequest from the estate of Arthur E. Yates (1915–1997), president of Yates Bleachery Company and a dedicated friend of the University of Tennessee, the Yates Dissertation Fellowships provide stipends equivalent to teaching associate stipends in most disciplines to support the final stages of dissertation preparation.
When asked to discuss his dissertation, Green provided a poignant synopsis: “During my PhD, I have been fortunate to receive diverse training and to work closely with both local and regional communities on a range of projects related to the criminal legal system, restorative justice, and community safety. My dissertation examines two contrasting conceptualizations of safety—carceral and community-based—across multiple contexts and methodologies. Specifically, I am interested in exploring the structural factors that influence policing at the state level, as well as the ways communities construct and interpret the meaning of safety at the local level.”
Congratulations, Cole, on this major accomplishment!
