KINESIOLOGY, RECREATION, AND SPORT STUDIES

The Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport Studies (KRSS) is one of the largest departments at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, home to over 2,200 undergraduate and graduate students, 38 faculty, and 13 staff. Situated within the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, KRSS spans three interconnected fields — kinesiology, recreation, and sport management — united by a shared commitment to scholarship, teaching, and public engagement.

Kinesiology

Kinesiology refers to the study of movement. In American higher education, the term is used to describe a multifaceted field of study in which movement or physical activity is the intellectual focus. (From National Academy of Kinesiology)

Recreation

Therapeutic Recreation, also known as Recreational Therapy, is a systematic process that utilizes recreation and other activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions as a means to phycological and physical health, recovery and well-being.”

Sport Management

Sport management includes any combination of skills related to planning, organizing, leading, marketing, communicating, and evaluating within the context of an organization whose primary product or service is related to sport.

KRSS

KRSS is home to 38 faculty members and 13 staff members. The department provides over 2,000 undergraduate students an opportunity to major in either kinesiology or recreation and sport management. Approximately 180 Graduate students (MS and PhD programs) can choose to specialize in exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport psychology/motor behavior, physical activity epidemiology, sport management, therapeutic recreation, or socio-cultural studies. In addition to our majors, the department also serves approximately 5,500 students per year in the Physical Education Activity Program.
