Biography

Dr. Stergios Botzakis is professor in Theory and Practice in Teacher Education at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His areas of expertise are content area literacy, middle school education, working with struggling adolescent readers, and new literacies. His research interests include middle and secondary education, adolescent literacies, popular culture, graphic novels, and media literacy. He has been published in the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, Reading Research Quarterly, Review of Research in Education, English Journal, Language Arts, The ALAN Review, and Teacher Education Quarterly among other venues.

Dr. Botzakis is currently working on two studies involving graphic novels and comics. The first examines how third- and fourth-grade students create comic biographies of notable women from the American Revolution. The second is a national survey about if and how k-12 teachers use comics and graphic novels for instruction.

Literacy education faculty host free virtual literacy series (#UTLitSeries)! Sessions occur once a Month and have a one-hour duration. Topics address literacy development and instruction (e.g., phonological awareness components with practices, oral language).
