Program’s Value
At the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UT), we recognize literacy as a foundational pillar that shapes academic achievement, professional success, and responsible citizenship. As an essential skill, literacy influences every aspect of a learner’s journey, from early education to career advancement. We are committed to supporting educators who strive to create lasting impacts on their students’ lives and futures, empowering them to thrive both academically and professionally.
Our collaborative approach involves working closely with educators and administrators to deepen their understanding of how reading, writing, and critical thinking develop over time. We focus on equipping educators with strategies and insights to support learners across all stages of literacy acquisition—from the foundational stages of reading, spelling, and writing to the more advanced stages of critical thinking, complex problem-solving, and analytical reasoning.
In line with the evolving demands of modern education, we emphasize the integration of cutting-edge tools, such as technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications, to enhance teaching and learning. By incorporating these innovative resources, educators can foster dynamic, interactive, and personalized learning environments that inspire growth and achievement. Furthermore, we promote the development of essential student attributes such as self-regulation, intrinsic motivation, and a growth mindset—key factors in nurturing lifelong learners who are equipped to succeed in an ever-changing global landscape.
At UT, we invite passionate and forward-thinking educators to join us in our mission to advance literacy education. Together, we can shape the future of education by providing students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to excel in their academic pursuits and future careers. We believe that through collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to excellence, we can transform the learning experience and empower the next generation of thinkers, creators, and leaders.
National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)
According to the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), 69% of American fourth-grade students performed below the proficient level for reading achievement, and 40% of fourth graders scored below the basic level. These results indicate a 2% decrease compared to 2022 proficiency levels and a 4% decrease compared to 2019 (National Center for Education Statistics, 2024). Student scores at the 75th, 50th, 25th, and 10th percentile levels decreased significantly from 2022, while scores at the 90th percentile level did not change significantly. These results indicate the need for literacy specialists expertise in our local schools. [/highlight]
