4.1 Project Title: Use of Accelerometer and Gyroscope Data to Improve Precision of Estimates of Physical Activity Type and Energy Expenditure in Free-Living Adults.
Timeline: 2022-present
Funder: National Institutes of Health
PI: S. Crouter and W. Ding (UMass Boston)
Description: This project will develop and validate machine learning algorithms using raw accelerometer and gyroscope sensor data collected at the hip and wrist for use in free-living adults. These algorithms will be able to estimate energy expenditure and classify the type of activity being performed, significantly improving upon current methods that typically only use accelerometer data. These algorithms will have direct benefit to those examining dose-response relationships between sedentary behaviors, physical activity, and health outcomes in adults, in the physical activity and public health fields.

Graduate Students
The Physical Activity Assessment Laboratory is always looking for passionate, well-qualified graduate students interested in physical activity assessment. This includes both model development and validation and application in cross-sectional and intervention research projects.
Prospective graduate students may apply for a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology or PhD in Kinesiology. Inquiries about open positions are best directed to Dr. Scott Crouter, the director of the Physical Activity Assessment Laboratory. Teaching and research assistantships are available for well-qualified students and the graduate curriculum can be adjusted to fit the goals, needs, and future career direction of the student.
Undergraduate Students
Undergraduate students interested in completing research within the field of physical activity assessment are advised to contact Dr. Scott Crouter for information regarding research opportunities within the Physical Activity Assessment Laboratory. The Physical Activity Assessment Laboratory requires undergraduate students to commit to at least one semester within the laboratory. However, longer commitments to the lab are favored. Undergraduate students brought on as an assistant within the Physical Activity Assessment Laboratory will aid in ongoing research projects and are encouraged to develop their own research ideas. Students are also encouraged to present at the Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement (EURēCA) annual event and the Southeast American College of Sports Medicine Regional Meeting.
