Pride Month

June is Pride Month, a month-long celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) Americans. This celebration honors the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, New York as the tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. Originally celebrated the last Sunday in June as “Gay Pride Day,” today’s celebrations feature a month-long series of events such as pride parades, cookouts, parties, and workshops.

To recognize and celebrate this month, CEHHS created a curated list of resources centering LGBTQ+ voices and stories. These resources are available through the UT Library and online.

The Pride Center

The Pride Center is the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) resource center at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. They strive to be a space for all members of the UT community to engage with and explore issues relating to gender and sexuality through our events, programming, community space, and initiatives.

Facilitated by the Pride Center, these workshops focus on educating people on LGBTQ+ related topics such as basic terminology, awareness, skills, and knowledge. Safe Zone is open to all current faculty, staff, and students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

The PRIDElist is a published signature campaign intended to raise the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community and its friends at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. With the PRIDElist, we want our LGBTQ+ students to know that they are not alone during their time here at Rocky Top, but in fact, are surrounded by faculty, staff, fellow students, friends, and alums who care about them and are passionate about making UT a more inclusive place.

The Pride Center Library offers a collection of LGBTQ+ and social justice themed books, magazines, DVDs, board games, and other resources for our campus community. This collection is intended to supplement what media is available through UT Libraries.

The Pride Center releases a biweekly newsletter with announcements about our events, information about campus programming, job and scholarship opportunities, and calls for research participation in addition to other content.

Stonewall Uprising

The Stonewall Uprising (also known as the Stonewall Riots) began on June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn, one of the most popular gay bars in New York City. With the criminalization of “same-sex relationships” at the time, police raided many gay bars. In response to these raids, LGBTQ+ protesters and police clashed in a series of events over six days. While not the first rebellion against the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals, the Stonewall Uprising marks a shift in activism, primarily for White cisgender people. This event and the first iterations of Pride were acts of resistance lead by transgender women of color (such as Marsha P. Johnson), who are often left out of the narrative.
