The Community Nutrition Graduate Certificate prepares professionals to apply nutrition science and evidence-based strategies to improve nutrition-related health outcomes among groups, communities, and populations. Through 14 graduate credit hours, students develop competencies in community nutrition assessment, intervention and evaluation, health behavior change, applied human nutrition, nutrition fundamentals, and public policy.
The certificate provides a strong foundation for individuals interested in careers with health departments and other community-based, nutrition-related organizations. Available through asynchronous online courses, the certificate is designed for University of Tennessee, Knoxville, graduate students from all disciplines as well as community members who hold a graduate degree. The program is offered to both Knoxville Campus and Distance Education students and may be completed as an add-on or stand-alone certificate.

Overview of nutrient functions in fundamental biological processes (in non-disease states), including energy transformation, metabolic regulation, and growth/development, all with emphasis on application in community and public health settings, including the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI), and nutrition-related evidenced-based guidelines.
NUTR 531 – Nutrition Fundamentals
A study of how nutrition is related to health and disease through digestion, absorption, transport, and metabolism throughout the life cycle.
