{"id":1514,"date":"2018-07-02T12:04:01","date_gmt":"2018-07-02T16:04:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/volsteach.utdev3.wpengine.com\/?p=1514"},"modified":"2018-07-02T12:22:24","modified_gmt":"2018-07-02T16:22:24","slug":"volsteach-is-host-to-uts-math-and-science-center-upward-bound-math-science-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/volsteach\/2018\/07\/02\/volsteach-is-host-to-uts-math-and-science-center-upward-bound-math-science-program\/","title":{"rendered":"VolsTeach is host to UT&#8217;s Math and Science Center Upward Bound Math-Science Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This summer the VolsTeach library is home to a group of high school students who are participating in UT&#8217;s Upward Bound program.\u00a0 These students, who are from schools in the rural Appalachian area of Tennessee, are interested in pursuing a college education and career in the fields of math and science.Their summer research projects are being completed with the use of 3D printers.\u00a0 One group is creating animal bridges to cross over roads.\u00a0 The bridges would reduce road kill costs and protect the animals.\u00a0 The students are testing the direction of water runoff and heat absorption as they create the bridges.\u00a0 Additionally, they are testing black vs green bridges (green being more inviting for the animals, and black more durable for the structure). The second group is creating dog leg prosthetic devices.
