I think that being able to communicate your thoughts is one of the most important skills that a professional in any field can have and the VolsTeach program does a fantastic job at helping every student develop effective communication skills. I am passionate about gaining new experiences where I am able to translate and apply my own ideas to areas outside of my degree program, like working as a Research Fellow in the Office of U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn this summer- which would not have been possible without the experiences I have had with VolsTeach.\u201d Benjamin Bridges currently serves as Event Coordinator for <a href=\"https:\/\/ceems.utk.edu\/volsteach-for-appalachia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VolsTeach for Appalachia<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/vols.utk.edu\/easttnstemhub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EastTN STEMHub<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/tpte\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2024\/11\/Benjamin-Bridges-2_Sized-for-WP-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/tpte\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2024\/11\/Benjamin-Bridges-2_Sized-for-WP-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/tpte\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2024\/11\/Benjamin-Bridges-2_Sized-for-WP.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While in DC, Bridges\u2019 work was multi-faceted. He contributed to research into federal healthcare policies and used his STEM background \u201cto inform senior legislative staff of specific biochemistry mechanisms surrounding bio pharmaceuticals and in the field of nephrology to aid in policy decision-making.\u201d Additionally, Benjamin gained experience gathering and analyzing Tennessee demographic data in Python to better learn the needs of the general population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his DC fellowship, Benjamin also met with many leaders, including UTK Chancellor, Donde Plowman, attended Senate Committee Hearings, and participated in \u201cA Capitol Fourth,\u201d an annual Independence Day celebration that takes place on the National Mall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lifelong resident of Knoxville, Benjamin\u2019s interests are broad, and next in the field of science he is pursuing advanced scuba diving so that he may explore intricate symbiotic relationships in the ocean. Benjamin is also fluent in Spanish and Farsi.
