Missy D. Cosby is an assistant professor in STEM (Math) education in the Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
She received her Ph.D. in educational psychology & educational technology with a concentration in mathematics education at Michigan State University.
Her research examines the connections between social identities and access and participation in mathematics teaching and learning. In addition, Cosby engages in community engaged research in collaboration with organizations that provide meaningful mathematics learning experiences to local youth. Her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and presented at conferences for the American Educational Research Association (AERA), Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE), and the North American chapter of the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME – NA).
Cosby has more than 25 years of experience in mathematics education at the K-12 and university level serving as a high school mathematics teacher, community college instructor, 9 – 12 mathematics instructional coach, and secondary mathematics teaching methods course instructor. She teaches mathematics content and methods courses for prospective teachers in the secondary education bachelor’s and master’s degree programs as well as doctoral courses focused on critical issues in mathematics and STEM education.
