Joy G. Bertling is an associate professor of art education in the Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Her research engages with critical place-based art education and other arts-based ecopedagogies including the ways in which they can intersect with data visualization practices. Last year, her book Art Education for a Sustainable Planet: Embracing Ecopedagogy in K-12 Classrooms was published with Teachers College Press. She has published articles in various peer-reviewed journals including Studies in Art Education, Art Education, and Environmental Education Research. In recent years, Joy has founded and chaired the National Art Education Association’s Ecology and Environment Interest Group and chaired the American Educational Research Association’s Arts and Learning Special Interest Group. In 2022, she was named the National Art Education Association Southeastern Region’s Higher Education Art Education of the Year. Currently, she directs the Arts-Based Data Visualization Project, a project funded by the U.S. Department of Education, and serves as Principal Editor-Elect of the International Journal of Education through Art.
