Educational Studies Concentration, Cultural Studies in Education Foundations Specialization
The MS in Teacher Education, Educational Studies Concentration, Cultural Studies in Educational Foundations Specialization is for licensed teachers who are interested in advancing their knowledge about Cultural Studies in Education. It does not lead to initial licensure. The graduate programs in Cultural Studies in Educational Foundations (CSE) at the University of Tennessee represent a unique and challenging interdisciplinary experience. The programs’ intellectual identity emerges from a post-disciplinary orientation which includes coursework and research across the traditions of anthropology, history, philosophy, psychology, and sociology. Academically based community service, community based participatory research, and philosophical, ethnographic, critical race, and feminist inquiry in the programs’ coursework address fundamental issues in education and relations of power. Students in the programs join an intellectual community committed to issues of social justice as well as theoretical, methodological, and discursive work. Faculty encourage students to collaborate and to study and research across disciplinary boundaries. Graduates of the program teach in Cultural Studies and Social Foundations of Education in higher education and or conduct work in these areas in applied educational, social, and political settings.

Thesis: Minimum 33 semester hours of coursework (2/3 at 500-level or above), and satisfactory completion of written thesis and oral defense of thesis;
Non-Thesis: Minimum of 33 semester hours of coursework (2/3 at 500-level or above), and satisfactory completion of written comprehensive examination
