{"id":578,"date":"2017-10-20T22:22:10","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T22:22:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cehhs-wds-dev.utk.edu\/sportandpeace\/?p=578"},"modified":"2021-01-13T14:55:21","modified_gmt":"2021-01-13T19:55:21","slug":"csps-celebrates-wonder-women-using-sport-to-impact-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/sportandpeace\/2017\/10\/20\/csps-celebrates-wonder-women-using-sport-to-impact-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"CSPS Celebrates &#8220;Wonder Women&#8221; Using Sport to Impact the World"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"responsive-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"GSMP 2017: Wonder Women\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MpGTt0jfcqc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>For the sixth year, UT\u2019s Center for Sport, Peace, and Society has joined with the US Department of State and espnW to organize one of the world\u2019s\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GlobalSportsMentoringProgram\/videos\/838075509699253\/\">leading mentorship programs<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>for women in sports.<\/p>\n<p>The center, a cooperative partner for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/\"><strong>US Department of State\u2019s Global Sports Mentoring Program<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(GSMP) since 2012, selected 17 women from 15 countries, including first-time participant countries Palestine, Morocco, Bolivia, and Belgium, to participate in the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/globalsportsmentoringprogram\/sets\/72157687087976364\/\">five-week exchange program<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>hosted in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you work with the best and the brightest women in the world, every year only becomes more spectacular,\u201d said Ashleigh Huffman, the center\u2019s co-founder and assistant director. \u201cAs the sisterhood grows and we welcome more game changers into the family, the program transcends the five-week experience and becomes a continuation of a movement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Before the start of this program, 113 leaders from 63 countries have participated in the GSMP, either in women\u2019s empowerment or disability sport exchanges. These leaders have returned home to launch their own nongovernmental organizations, serve in leadership positions in their governments and national sports federations, and win numerous awards for service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are amazed and inspired by the work of GSMP alumnae all over the world,\u201d said Hillyer. \u201cThe global footprint of this program can literally be felt in hundreds of communities. For that, we thank not only the international delegates who have carried the torch and faced the challenges head on, but the US Department of State for making the empowerment of girls and women a central part of their mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These are the women who make up the 2017 GSMP: Empower Women through Sports class:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/agnes-baluka-masajja\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Agnes Baluka Masajja (Uganda)<\/strong><\/a>, mentored at UConn, is a Ugandan educator and head of the education commission for the Association of Ugandan University Sports. She seeks use the intersection of sports, education and business to empower generations of Ugandan girls.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/aline-silva\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Aline Silva (Brazil)<\/strong><\/a>, mentored at Google, is the first Brazilian to medal at the world championships of wrestling. She wants to use her story and platform to turn millions of girls in her country into empowered warriors.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/alejandra-rodriguez-larrain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Alejandra Rodriguez-Larrain (Peru)<\/strong><\/a>, mentored at Under Armour, is a marathoner and CEO of Peru Runners, an organization that uses running to impact thousands of Peruvians from all backgrounds.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/carole-ponchon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carole Ponchon (France)<\/a><\/strong>, mentored at Women&#8217;s Sports Foundation,\u00a0is a projects manager for the European Observatoire of Sports and Employment who is looking to elevate the importance of sport for empowering women in France.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/caroline-lembe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Caroline Lembe (Belgium)<\/strong><\/a>, mentored at Eli Lilly &amp; Company,\u00a0is the co-founder of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Siki-Lab-268270020255211\/\">Siki-Lab<\/a>\u00a0and an assistant boxing trainer in Belgium. She wants to show sports belongs to all people, regardless of race, age, background or gender.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/carmen-pozo-rios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Carmen Pozo Rios (Bolivia)<\/strong><\/a>, mentored at Saatchi Los Angeles,\u00a0is the first female sports journalist in Bolivia. She and a colleague launched a magazine and soccer academy called Las Superpoderosas that is teaching girls how to become &#8220;super powerful&#8221; women through sports.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/chisom-mbonu-ezeoke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chisom Mbonu-Ezeoke (Nigeria)<\/strong><\/a>, mentored at Fox Sports,\u00a0is a pioneering Nigerian sports journalist who is among the most prominent female voices covering professional sports in her country.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/claudia-contreras\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Claudia Contreras (Venezuela)<\/strong><\/a>, mentored at Gatorade, is a Venezuelan former national rugby captain and co-founder of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DPDVenezuela\/\">Deporte para el Desarrollo<\/a>, an organization that impacts Venezuela&#8217;s underserved communities by developing and empowering sports coaches.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/elvira-dushku\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Elvira Dushku (Kosovo)<\/strong><\/a>, mentored at San Antonio Spurs,\u00a0is a former Kosovan basketball player and the first female secretary general of the Basketball Federation of Kosovo. She wants to give girls across her country the chance to find empowerment through basketball.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/nalwadda-immaculate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Immaculate Chocho Nalwadda (Uganda)<\/a><\/strong>, mentored at Big East,\u00a0is a Ugandan political leader, sportswoman, and gender advocate. She works with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/OfficialUOC\/\">Uganda Olympic Committee<\/a>, and seeks to use sports to change the lives of thousands of girls and women.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/malak-hasan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malak Hasan (Palestine)<\/a><\/strong>, mentored at ESPN, is a freelance journalist and the first female secretary general of the Palestinian Boxing Federation. She uses sport as an outlet to advocate for gender equality and inclusion.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/megha-vora\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Megha Vora (India)<\/strong><\/a>, mentored at Google,\u00a0has opened women&#8217;s self-defense centers across India. She is teaching Indian women how to fight back against violence and harassment, and seeks to open 1,000 centers to make India a more peaceful nation.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/minjei-jeon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minjei Jeon (South Korea)<\/a><\/strong>, mentored at NCAA,\u00a0is the deputy manager of school sports for the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee. She wants to build a Korea where sport and education are bonded together for making a positive impact in the lives of students.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/naoual-zaaraoui\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Naoual Zaaraoui (Morocco)<\/strong><\/a>, mentored at PGA of America, is a track and field coach with the Royal Moroccan Athletics Federation, and seeks to use sport to provide women with professional skills that will allow them to pursue successful careers.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/po-chun-liu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Po-Chun Liu (Taiwan)<\/strong><\/a>, mentored at NHL,\u00a0is the first female baseball umpire in Taiwan and a prominent advocate more inclusive sports environment for women.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/sangeetha-manoharan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sangeetha Manoharan (India)<\/strong><\/a>, mentored at Burton Snowboards,\u00a0\u00a0is an Indian ultimate frisbee player and coach for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Welcome.To.The.Quad\/\">The Quad<\/a>. She has traveled the world representing her country, and now dreams of using the sport to empower Indian girls to reach their full potential.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/globalsportsmentoring.org\/global-sports-mentor-program\/emerging-leaders\/xinyi-hua\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Xinyi Hua (China)<\/strong><\/a>, mentored at ESPN,\u00a0is a Chinese sports journalist and one of the most prominent women covering sports in her country. She believes sport is about storytelling and more than just competition. She wants to use her platform to bring more Chinese women into the sports media profession.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The program began on September 23 and concludes in Washington, DC, on October 31.
