Photo credit: Jaron Johns\" width=\"443\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the final five days of our South America\u00a0trip, the CSPS team visited\u00a0with <a href=\"http:\/\/globalsportswomen.org\/global-sports-mentoring-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global Sports Mentoring Program<\/a> alumna Luz Amuchastegui (class of 2013) in her hometown of Rosario, Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>Luz and her staff at\u00a0El Desaf\u00edo Foundation\u00a0work to transform their neighborhood, which is home to two of the oldest and most dangerous shantytowns in the city,\u00a0<em>La Lata<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Villa Moreno,\u00a0<\/em>through innovate sports and educational workshops that keep kids engaged and on a path\u00a0toward success.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a summary of our activities\u00a0during the five days we spent in Rosario.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 1: Field and Classroom Sessions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After recuperating from the overnight flight from Sao Paulo, Luz gathered\u00a0the team\u00a0from our\u00a0hotel and brought us to the El Desafio headquarters, a medium-sized warehouse facility that has been repainted and arranged\u00a0to host more than 160 kids with multiple programs happening concurrently.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the program participants, volunteers and \u201cyoung leaders\u201d \u2014 program graduates who have been given opportunities to work part-time with the organization, and who also serve as role models for younger participants \u2014 were there to welcome us. We spent the day breaking the ice and building trust with them through some of the classic games in Drs. Hillyer\u2019s and Huffman\u2019s arsenal, and talking about what El Desafio has done for their lives.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sportandpeaceutk.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/16214765573_d880366ea4_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-284\" src=\"https:\/\/sportandpeaceutk.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/16214765573_d880366ea4_z.jpg?w=443&amp;h=296\" alt=\"16214765573_d880366ea4_z\" width=\"443\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis is my city, and I don\u2019t think it\u2019s fair for people to live the way they do in these shantytowns. We\u2019re here to try and create a different future for the kids from these neighborhoods by working together and giving them the tools to fix their own community.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Luz Amuchastegui, GSMP 2013<\/p>\n<p>During these sessions, we met\u00a0a trio of best friends \u2014 Andy, Damian and Marco \u2014 who have been together at El Desafio for over a year, and who have all taken on\u00a0roles as soccer coaches, providing mentorship and leadership to another generation of El Desafio participants. We also met Agustina, a 17-year-old who is coaching the\u00a0<em>Mini Gigantes (<\/em>\u201clittle giants\u201d) soccer team of 12-13 year-olds, becoming one of very few young women\u00a0coaching boys soccer\u00a0in the city.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sportandpeaceutk.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/16646903958_a664118e32_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-286\" src=\"https:\/\/sportandpeaceutk.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/16646903958_a664118e32_z.jpg?w=443&amp;h=296\" alt=\"16646903958_a664118e32_z\" width=\"443\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn Argentina,\u00a0the economics have been so difficult in the past years, and people have lost a lot of hope. Then, in the middle of all of this, there\u2019s El Desafio, which is this kind of a shining jewel. I\u2019m so impressed by the fact they are absolutely committed to providing these kids the best experience possible, not just any experience.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Joan Coraggio, mentor and group communications director for Saatchi LA<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 2: Mini-Library and Volunteer Training at Urquiza Park<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Saturday morning, the CSPS team and mentors left for Urquiza Park to provide support for El Desafio staff as they installed their sixth Mini-Library, a major project undertaken to provide communal books and reading space for Rosario\u2019s residents.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sportandpeaceutk.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/16648788378_a273bf4b68_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-287\" src=\"https:\/\/sportandpeaceutk.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/16648788378_a273bf4b68_z.jpg?w=443&amp;h=296\" alt=\"16648788378_a273bf4b68_z\" width=\"443\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI really think the mini-library project has been a success. We have one man who called us after he saw one of our installations near his home. He started to take care of it and makes sure it\u2019s always stocked and that it is looked after.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0Sofi Cuadra, international relations manager for El Desafio<\/p>\n<p>After helping mix cement and ensuring\u00a0the Mini-Library was solidly in place, Drs. Hillyer and Huffman jumped into the volunteer training, led by El Desafio executive director Mario Raimondi. The exercises, focused on team building and responsible living, concluded with a dance session, where Dr. Huffman taught everyone a personalized dance version of\u00a0Rocky Top.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sportandpeaceutk.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/16810329416_29ffc8a37e_o-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-290\" src=\"https:\/\/sportandpeaceutk.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/16810329416_29ffc8a37e_o-1.jpg?w=442&amp;h=295\" alt=\"16810329416_29ffc8a37e_o (1)\" width=\"442\" height=\"295\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cUltimately, the more educated young children are, the less likely\u00a0they are to get into trouble as teens, which then multiples the problems they\u2019ll have in their adult life. They\u2019re not just having an after-school program, they are changing\u00a0people\u2019s lives. They are making their world better.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0John Lisko, mentor and executive communications director for Saatchi LA<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 4: First Day of After-School Programming<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, El Desafio welcomed back kids\u00a0for the first day of after-school programming. The CSPS team got to be there to witness the energy and passion of the staff, volunteers and participants during the soccer, dance, field hockey and art classes.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the heat, the kids in the outdoor classes were excited to get to a small, turf field four blocks from the warehouse, where all practices for team sports are held. First up were the\u00a0<em>Mini Gigantes,<\/em>\u00a0then the older boys soccer teams, and finally the girls field hockey players. A former field hockey goalie herself, Luz even jumped in to share some expertise.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-288\" src=\"https:\/\/sportandpeaceutk.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/16676523418_0f91953939_z.jpg?w=443&amp;h=296\" alt=\"16676523418_0f91953939_z\" width=\"443\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMy life is my passion. What I do for my job is my passion. I am passionate about getting up every morning and being able to change other people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Luz Amuchastegui, GSMP 2013<\/p>\n<p>After the one-hour practices, the players returned to El Desafio with their coaches for a snack and time to hang out before leaving for the day. When the CSPS team arrived back at the warehouse,\u00a0the dance instructor was just finishing up her class.\u00a0Drs. Hillyer and Huffman couldn\u2019t resist jumping in to share their own moves with the group.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-285\" src=\"https:\/\/sportandpeaceutk.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/16241864414_25d7d2b9eb_z.jpg?w=443&amp;h=296\" alt=\"16241864414_25d7d2b9eb_z\" width=\"443\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLuz is someone I look to as a role model and an example for women in Rosario. She\u2019s married, but she\u2019s not at home washing dishes and cleaning the house. She\u2019s here with us everyday trying to win back this community.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Georgina, volunteer and field hockey coach<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 5: Second Day of After-School Programming<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before leaving for Buenos Aires, the CSPS team and mentors spent\u00a0our final hours in Rosario at El Desafio for its second-day of programming. In order for kids\u00a0to take multiple classes, the organization spreads its programming out throughout the week so different workshops\u00a0are available every day.<\/p>\n<p>On this occasion, the team experienced\u00a0El Desafio\u2019s inaugural skateboarding class, where 10 kids stepped on skateboards for the first time and practiced with instructors Bautista and Andy at a nearby basketball court, long abandoned to disuse and recently\u00a0reclaimed by\u00a0the organization. Skateboarding was followed by a music class, with the sound of beating drums and laughter filling El Desafio\u2019s warehouse\u00a0before snack time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-283\" src=\"https:\/\/sportandpeaceutk.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/16865324642_93518a0373_k.jpg?w=442&amp;h=295\" alt=\"16865324642_93518a0373_k\" width=\"442\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLuz was just such a positive influence to us within the agency; just a really inspiring individual. It\u2019s unreal that we\u2019ve now had the opportunity to come and see what she has created, to see it live and in person, and actually in action. It\u2019s a phenomenal, once in a lifetime<\/em>\u00a0<em>opportunity.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Gwen Conley, mentor and group media director for Saatchi LA<\/p>\n<p>As the afternoon drew to a close, it was time to say our goodbyes to the volunteers, participants and staff at El Desafio \u2014 never a painless task when befriending\u00a0people with such strong commitment and love for doing their part\u00a0to create\u00a0new, improved Rosario.<\/p>\n<p>One of the more touching final moments of the trip happened when Agustina, who received\u00a0a U.S. women\u2019s national soccer team jersey earlier in the week from Dr. Huffman for\u00a0her role coaching boys soccer, wrote out and shared a short speech about how meaningful the presence of\u00a0the CSPS team and GSMP mentors was for her.<\/p>\n<p>Agustina began\u00a0attending El Desafio in early 2014 after Luz spoke at her school. Last year, she signed up for and finished cooking and mentoring classes. And, although\u00a0she has\u00a0played soccer since the age of 5, she never considered being a coach until she got the push from Luz and Mario.<\/p>\n<p>At 17 years old,\u00a0Agustina is committed to securing a bright future for herself, and, at the same time, understands she is\u00a0a role model for other girls in her community.<\/p>\n<p>At the very core, that is what El Desafio is slowly building:\u00a0a generation of kids like Agustina, Andy, Damian and Marco who will transform\u00a0<em>La Lata<\/em> and <em>Villa Moreno,\u00a0<\/em>and bring back hope to many who lost it a long time ago.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-289\" src=\"https:\/\/sportandpeaceutk.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/16865345082_c054f46541_z.jpg?w=443&amp;h=296\" alt=\"16865345082_c054f46541_z\" width=\"443\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOur first practice, I felt really nervous, emotional and happy, too.
