{"id":1487,"date":"2018-02-05T16:13:32","date_gmt":"2018-02-05T16:13:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cehhs-wds-dev.utk.edu\/publichealth\/?page_id=1487"},"modified":"2025-02-14T14:27:04","modified_gmt":"2025-02-14T19:27:04","slug":"graduate-assistantships","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/publichealth\/funding-opportunities-1\/graduate-assistantships\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate Teaching Assistantships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">A g<em>raduate teaching assistantship (GTA) is a financial award given to a graduate student for part-time work in teaching.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Public Health Assistantships<\/h2>\n<div class=\"two-thirds column \">\n<p>The department has two types of GTAs available, each with varying work responsibilities.\u00a0 Those types include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduate teaching assistants<\/li>\n<li>Graduate teaching associates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These positions are awarded annually and recipients are expected to serve the entire academic year. When awarding GTA positions, preference is given to returning GTAs, doctoral students, and returning MPH students (in that order).<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Public Health seeks to provide financial support for all its doctoral students, although it is not guaranteed. Students must apply for all forms of funding; they are not provided without submitted applications. <em>We encourage students to apply for multiple forms of financial assistance<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4>Please Note<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Only applications from currently enrolled PhD Students, newly admitted PhD students, and currently enrolled full-time MPH students with a minimum of one year of program course work will be considered for GTA positions in the Department of Public Health\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Newly admitted MPH students are not eligible to apply.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Only students who submit an application will be considered for a GTA\u00a0 position.<\/li>\n<li>No applications will be reviewed prior to the April 1 deadline.<\/li>\n<li>Assistantship positions officially start in the fall of each year.<\/li>\n<li>Assistantships are subject to available funding.<\/li>\n<li>International student who are awarded a GTA position are required to pass the <a href=\"https:\/\/gradschool.utk.edu\/future-students\/office-of-graduate-admissions\/ita-testing-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OPIC Language Test <\/a>before assuming assistantship responsibilities.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>To be considered for a GTA position, students must submit an application each year regardless of past class=\"clearshortcode\"><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What to Expect if Awarded<\/h2>\n<div class=\"half \">\n<h4>Benefits<\/h4>\n<p>All positions provide the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tuition \/ maintenance fee<\/li>\n<li>Health insurance<\/li>\n<li>Monthy stipend* (paid over twelve months)<br \/>\n<strong><em>*Salary (stipend) is subject to federal income tax.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students remain responsible for paying all other university fees, including (but not limited to) programs and services fees, campus facilities fees, technology fees, library fees, and transportation fees.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"half \">\n<h4>Work Load<\/h4>\n<p>Postions can be either 25% or 50% appointments.\u00a0 The work loads for each type are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>50% appointment = 20 hours of work per week, excluding organized class time.\u00a0 Students must be registered for a minimum of 6 credit hours.<\/li>\n<li>25% appointment = 10 hours of work per week, excluding organized class few GTA positions available.\u00a0 Open assistantship positions are awarded in the following preferential order:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Returning GTAs<\/li>\n<li>PhD Students<\/li>\n<li>Current MPH collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<p>Yes.\u00a0 Assistantship opportunities are also available through other departments on campus.\u00a0 General information regarding graduate assistantships and a list of some (but not all) GA positions in other departments is available on the <a href=\"http:\/\/gradschool.utk.edu\/asstshipfunds.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UT Graduate School<\/a>\u00a0website.\u00a0The applicable policies governing graduate assistantships are in the <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.utk.edu\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Graduate Catalog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, occasionally individual public health faculty members will hire students to serve as graduate research assistants (GRA).\u00a0 GRAs are paid positions but rarely
