Applications due annually on April 1. Various focus areas. $5,000 to $20,000.

Allen Foundation

Projects that benefit human nutrition in areas of education, training, and research.  Applications due annually on December 31. Wide range of funding amounts.

American Cancer Society

Research areas include prevention, diagnosis, early detection and treatment; behavioral, social, and health policy. Emphasis is on independent investigators, mentored training and career development, pre-doctoral training, professorships, special initiatives, and international research programs. Applications due April 1, 2014.

American College of Sports Medicine

Applications due annually in January. $5,000 to $10,000. Variety of areas of interest: seed money for new investigators; research related to clinical sports medicine; physical activity epidemiology; research by doctoral students; behavioral strategies to promote physical activity; exercise, weightlessness, and musculoskeletal physiology; thermoregulation, exercise, and hydration.

American Diabetes Association

Funding research to prevent and cure diabetes and improve the lives of people affected by diabetes. Basic and clinical research, faculty and researcher development, training. Some targeted RFPs. Deadlines in January and July.

American Heart Association

For research in cardiovascular science for independent researchers and for pre and post-doc fellowships. Current research foci are hypertension and disparities in cardiovascular disease.

American Institute of Cancer Research

The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) Grant Program is dedicated to funding research on cancer prevention, treatment, and survival through food, nutrition, physical activity and weight management.

Arthritis National Research Foundation

Funding young investigators to jump-start their research to find new treatments and to cure arthritis. Applications accepted annually in January.

Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, The

Strengthening education and improving teaching in grades 9-12. Up to $200,000. Applications accepted April 1 and November 1 annually.

Carnegie Corporation of New York

National grant-making supports the revitalization of democracy by funding new pathways to educational and economic opportunity; and to citizenship, civic participation, and immigrant integration in a pluralistic society. Letters of inquiry for projects that support their various programs accepted on a continual basis.

Dollar General Literacy Foundation

Funding programs for adult literacy, youth literacy, and family literacy. Applications available in January annually.

Force and Motion Foundation

Supports students in fields related to multi-axis force measurement and testing with academic scholarships and travel awards.

Foundation for Child Development

Supports research, policy development, advocacy, and communications strategies related to their work in advocating for restructuring of Pre-K through 3rd grade.

Foundation for the National Institutes of Health

Supporting the mission of the NIH by identifying and addressing complex scientific and health issues and raising private sector funds for unique programs that complement and enhance NIH priorities and activities.

Jacobs Foundation

Funding projects that are aimed at the development and alignment of new and sustainable approaches in the field of child and youth development. They support innovative basic research, application-oriented intervention research, and also practical projects in all fields of importance for child and youth development.

Juvenile Diabetes Foundation

Grants and fellowships for researchers interested in the cure and prevention of type 1 diabetes. Improving the quality of life for person with T1D also of interest.

National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance

Provides a grant program supporting colleges and universities teaching invention, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, it funds curriculum development and the work of teams of student inventors.

Nutricia Research Foundation

UK based. Grants for nutrition related research projects. Maximum of € 25,000 per year. Applications due in September annually.

RGK Foundation

Funding for education programs that focus on math, science, and reading; community programs in human services, community improvement, abuse prevention, and youth development; and health/medicine programs that promote health and well-being of children. Will accept one letter of inquiry per organization per year, so please check with the Office of Research and Engagement (Jim Lloyd) to determine eligibility.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Committed to improving the health and healthcare of all Americans. Program areas include childhood obesity, public health, and vulnerable populations.  Accepts unsolicited and solicited proposals.

Spencer Foundation

Grants and fellowships in five areas of inquiry: education and social opportunity; organizational learning; purposes and value of education; teaching, learning, and instructional resources; field-initiated proposals. Deadlines vary. Grants up to $500,000.

Wallace Foundation

Based in New York City, The Wallace Foundation is a national philanthropy that seeks to improve education and enrichment for disadvantaged children. Their major initiatives are school leadership; after school, summer and extended learning time; arts education; and audience development for the arts.

William T. Grant Foundation

The William T. Grant Foundation supports work to improve the lives of youth ages 5 to 25 in the United States. They fund research, fellowships, and service improvements that fit their Current Research Interests. A new research initiative in 2014 is to understand the programs, policies, and practices that reduce inequality in your outcomes. The resources developed under their previous social settings initiative remain relevant as settings are a critical lens for examining inequality. Their Fellowship programs foster the development of early- and mid-career professionals.
