When awarding GTA positions, preference is given to returning GTAs, doctoral students, and returning MPH students (in that order).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Nutrition and Public Health Sciences seeks to provide financial support for all its doctoral students, although it is not guaranteed. Students must apply for all forms of funding; they are not provided without submitted applications.&nbsp;<em>We encourage students to apply for multiple forms of financial assistance<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Please Note<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Only applications from currently enrolled PhD Students, newly admitted PhD students, and currently enrolled full-time MPH students with a minimum of one year of program coursework will be considered for GTA positions in the Department of Nutrition and Public Health Sciences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Newly admitted MPH students are not eligible to apply.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only students who submit an application will be considered for a GTA&nbsp; The workloads for each type are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">25% appointment = 10 hours of work per week, excluding organized class time.&nbsp; Students must be registered for a minimum of 9 credit hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">50% appointment = 20 hours of work per week, excluding organized class time.&nbsp; Students must be registered for a minimum of 6 credit hours.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull utkwds-accordion-group has-white-color has-smokey-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-1 has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--small)\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-utk-wds-accordion\"><div data-accordion=\"true\" class=\"utk-wds-accordion-wrapper\" data-color-scheme=\"dark\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-utk-wds-accordion-panel\"><h2 class=\"utk-wds-accordion__heading\" data-accordion-heading=\"true\"><div>Who can apply for an assistantship position?<\/div><\/h2><section data-accordion-section=\"true\"><div class=\"utk-wds-accordion__panel-body\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Applications from the following students will be considered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Currently enrolled PhD students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Newly admitted PhD students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Currently enrolled MPH students who have completed a minimum of one semester of program coursework*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>*Applications from newly admitted MPH students will not be considered.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-utk-wds-accordion-panel\"><h2 class=\"utk-wds-accordion__heading\" data-accordion-heading=\"true\"><div><strong>What is the likelihood that I will be awarded an assistantship with the Department of Nutrition and Public Health Sciences?<\/strong><\/div><\/h2><section data-accordion-section=\"true\"><div class=\"utk-wds-accordion__panel-body\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department has very few GTA positions available.\u00a0 Open assistantship positions are awarded in the following preferential order:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Returning GTAs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PhD Students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Current MPH students<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newly admitted MPH students are not eligible for GTA positions within the department.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-utk-wds-accordion-panel\"><h2 class=\"utk-wds-accordion__heading\" data-accordion-heading=\"true\"><div><strong>What is the deadline to apply?<\/strong><\/div><\/h2><section data-accordion-section=\"true\"><div class=\"utk-wds-accordion__panel-body\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deadline for applying for a GTA position is April 1 of each year.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-utk-wds-accordion-panel\"><h2 class=\"utk-wds-accordion__heading\" data-accordion-heading=\"true\"><div><strong>When will I know whether or not I have been awarded a GTA position that I have applied for?<\/strong><\/div><\/h2><section data-accordion-section=\"true\"><div class=\"utk-wds-accordion__panel-body\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We strive to notify applicants of whether or not they have been awarded a position no later than one month after the application deadline.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-utk-wds-accordion-panel\"><h2 class=\"utk-wds-accordion__heading\" data-accordion-heading=\"true\"><div><strong>\u00a0Are there other assistantship opportunities available on campus?<\/strong><\/div><\/h2><section data-accordion-section=\"true\"><div class=\"utk-wds-accordion__panel-body\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.&nbsp; Assistantship opportunities are also available through other departments on campus.&nbsp; General information regarding graduate assistantships and a list of some (but not all) GA positions in other departments is available on the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/gradschool.utk.edu\/asstshipfunds.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UT Graduate School<\/a>&nbsp;website.&nbsp;The applicable policies governing graduate assistantships are in the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.utk.edu\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Graduate Catalog<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, occasionally individual public health faculty members will hire students to serve as graduate research assistants (GRA).&nbsp;
