The Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport Studies was honored to celebrate Dixie Thompson\u2019s retirement on December 9, 2024.<\/p>\n
Colleagues, friends, and past students gathered to celebrate Thompson and her work at the university. A member of UT since 1994, Thompson served as a faculty member in KRSS and as department head from 2008 until 2012. She then went on to serve as the Associate Dean for Research and Academic Affairs in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences until 2016. Finally, Thompson\u2019s journey led her to become the Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School until her retirement.<\/p>\n

Past doctoral student Ann Swartz is quoted as saying, \u201cI appreciate the opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to a remarkable woman who has profoundly impacted my life\u2014my PhD mentor, Dixie Thompson. Dixie was, and is, an amazing mentor. She provided me with guidance when I needed it, continual strength and support, and enough latitude to be able to grow or fail. She had an unwavering belief in me that was invaluable, especially because I did not always believe in myself. She taught me the skills I need to succeed and the importance of resilience and authenticity. She inspires me every day to strive to be better and to elevate others as I move forward.<\/p>\n
Dixie, thank you for showing me what it means to be a strong, compassionate mentor and leader. I am incredibly grateful that I had the opportunity to learn from and work with you. As you move forward, I hope your life is filled with love and laughter. I hope every day brings you new adventures, endless joy, and the realization of your dreams.<\/p>\n
