The program was developed in 1977 at Virginia Tech as part of a class with the primary purpose of providing a meaningful, experiential learning opportunity for university students while involving youth and young adults with disabilities in outdoor activities that they would not be able to participate in otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>This service-learning and experiential education opportunity continues to be available to University of Tennessee students across campus. A three credit-hour class meets in the spring to prepare for their week at camp.<\/p>\n<p>During the first year of the program, a counselor\/camper duo submitted the winning name for the program \u2013 Camp Koinonia. Koinonia (\u201ckwan-a-nee-yah\u201d) comes from the Greek language and means \u201cfellowship\u201d and \u201ccaring community.\u201d Since that time the mission of Camp Koinonia has been to provide a \u201ccaring community\u201d for our campers in a sense of true \u201cfellowship.\u201d It is also said of Camp Koinonia that this is \u201can experience that will last a lifetime,\u201d which has proven true for hundreds of individuals over the years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">Camp Koinonia 2026 Dates:<br \/>\nApril 12th &#8211; April 17th<\/p>\n<p>Applications will be available by November 10<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"panel-group\" id=\"custom-collapse-0\" role=\"tablist\" aria-multiselectable=\"true\">\n<div class=\"panel  panel panel-default\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading\">\n<h3 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#custom-collapse-0\"\" href=\"#custom-collapse-0-0\"  aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"#custom-collapse-0-0\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-collapse\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M0 7.33l2.829-2.83 9.175 9.339 9.167-9.339 2.829 2.83-11.996 12.17z\"\/><\/svg> Our Goals<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"custom-collapse-0-0\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse panel-collapse collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<p>1. To provide each camper with an educational and fun oriented experience in an outdoor environment.<br \/>\n2. To provide an educational experience for each university student involved in the program.<br \/>\n3. To provide an enriching, rewarding experience to foster the emotional, social, and physical well-being of each camper.<br \/>\n4. To emphasize appropriate socialization in terms of playing and working together.<br \/>\n5. To emphasize what the camper <em>can do<\/em> rather than what he\/she cannot do.<br \/>\n6. The course used to train and prepare students for Camp Koinonia is a Vol Core course meeting the Engaged Inquiry component. This means that students from all over campus have the opportunity to register for this course and participate as staff at Camp Koinonia! This course is devoted to facilitating students\u2019 understanding of working with individuals with disabilities before actually implementing the Camp Koinonia experience.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel  panel panel-default\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading\">\n<h3 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#custom-collapse-1\"\" href=\"#custom-collapse-1-2\"  aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"#custom-collapse-1-2\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-collapse\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M0 7.33l2.829-2.83 9.175 9.339 9.167-9.339 2.829 2.83-11.996 12.17z\"\/><\/svg> Participants<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"custom-collapse-1-2\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse panel-collapse collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<p>The campers at Camp Koinonia come from a variety of schools and programs across the region, primarily the state of Tennessee. Most campers come from Knox, Blount, and Anderson counties. Campers can first attend at the age of 7 and are eligible to attend until they graduate from high school. The program is primarily geared toward those who do not typically have the opportunity to attend these types of programs. Primary disabilities include Down syndrome, Autism Spectum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual\/Developmental Disability, and others!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel  panel panel-default\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading\">\n<h3 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#custom-collapse-1\"\" href=\"#custom-collapse-1-3\"  aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"#custom-collapse-1-3\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-collapse\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M0 7.33l2.829-2.83 9.175 9.339 9.167-9.339 2.829 2.83-11.996 12.17z\"\/><\/svg> Activities<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"custom-collapse-1-3\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse panel-collapse collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<p>Programmed activities include canoeing, arts and crafts, sports and recreation, music and movement, mad science, outdoor adventure, exercise and wellness, come on down (a game show style activity), and give back (campers have the opportunity to participate in service-learning projects). Special events occur every night at camp and include a bonfire, socials, game nights, movies, a talent show, and everyone\u2019s favorite: the dance! Each activity is developed and implemented by 2-3 UT students, who are known as camp\u2019s Activity Staff. Activity Staff raise funds and gladly receive donations to purchase materials and supplies for each activity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel  panel panel-default\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading\">\n<h3 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#custom-collapse-1\"\" href=\"#custom-collapse-1-4\"  aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"#custom-collapse-1-4\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-collapse\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M0 7.33l2.829-2.83 9.175 9.339 9.167-9.339 2.829 2.83-11.996 12.17z\"\/><\/svg> Accommodations<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"custom-collapse-1-4\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse panel-collapse collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<p>The<a href=\"http:\/\/clydeyork4hcenter.org\/index-frameset.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Clyde M. York, 4-H Training Center<\/a> is an accessible facility located in Crossville, TN. Cabins include bunk beds, showers, and restroom facilities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel  panel panel-default\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading\">\n<h3 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#custom-collapse-1\"\" href=\"#custom-collapse-1-5\"  aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"#custom-collapse-1-5\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-collapse\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M0 7.33l2.829-2.83 9.175 9.339 9.167-9.339 2.829 2.83-11.996 12.17z\"\/><\/svg> Meals<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"custom-collapse-1-5\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse panel-collapse collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<p>The campers and staff will have three hot, well-balanced meals daily, prepared by the 4-H Center\u2019s cooking staff. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the dining hall where tables are separated into cabin groups. Trivia, joke-telling, and small games may be played to determine the order in which cabin groups are chosen to get in line to get their food.<\/p>\n<p>Please notify us of any food allergies or dietary restrictions your camper may follow. Unfortunately, 4-H is not always able to accommodate all food allergies. Please be prepared to bring meals and snacks for your camper in case we are unable to fully accommodate any food allergies\/dietary needs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel  panel panel-default\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading\">\n<h3 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#custom-collapse-1\"\" href=\"#custom-collapse-1-6\"  aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"#custom-collapse-1-6\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-collapse\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M0 7.33l2.829-2.83 9.175 9.339 9.167-9.339 2.829 2.83-11.996 12.17z\"\/><\/svg> Medical Staff<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"custom-collapse-1-6\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse panel-collapse collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<p>There will be at least two medical personnel on the premises 24 hours a day to administer medications and first aid. A medical facility is located within 10 miles of the 4-H Center. Our medicine administration is run by a team of nurses, med-certified staff, and University of Tennessee nursing students, who will help provide care and administer medications under the supervision of their clinical instructors. Each camper\u2019s medicines are carefully sorted, labeled, and distributed on time.<\/p>\n<p>It is required that you bring your camper\u2019s medications in their original bottles with instructions on how to administer them, dosage, and specific times to be administered.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel  panel panel-default\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading\">\n<h3 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#custom-collapse-1\"\" href=\"#custom-collapse-1-7\"  aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"#custom-collapse-1-7\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-collapse\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M0 7.33l2.829-2.83 9.175 9.339 9.167-9.339 2.829 2.83-11.996 12.17z\"\/><\/svg> Cost<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"custom-collapse-1-7\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse panel-collapse collapse\">\n<div class=\"panel-body\">\n<p>Applications will be available in late November. We are pleased to announce that the cost for each camper to attend Camp Koinonia is only $480.00 for the entire week! Over recent years, the costs of planning, operating, and executing camp have increased considerably. The actual cost for one camper to attend is about $1,000.00. UT students are charged a fee of $150 to participate. Aside from the camper and counselor fees, 100% of the costs of Camp Koinonia are paid for by the fundraising accomplished by students and the Camp Koinonia Foundation. We would like to thank all who graciously provide financial support to Camp Koinonia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Camp Koinonia Assistantship<\/h4>\n<p>The graduate student selected for this assistantship is responsible for Camp Koinonia initiatives\/programs. This is typically a second-year master\u2019s student who has demonstrated a passion for continually improving all aspects of Camp Koinonia. He is interested in helping people get connected with the world around them through programming and accessibility.
