Presentation 1: From Relationships to Resources: Collaborative Grant Writing in the Health Sciences
Speaker 1: Richard Rosenkranz, PhD, University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Bio: Richard Rosenkranz, PhD, FACSM, is Chair and Professor of Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is a behavioral scientist whose work examines physical activity and nutrition across individual, community, and systems levels, with an emphasis on implementation, dissemination, and real-world impact. He has published extensively in high-impact journals and is co-editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition & Physical Activity (IF=5.5).
Dr. Rosenkranz has amplified modest success as a principal investigator to play sustained leadership roles as a co-investigator, associate investigator, and site PI on federally funded, foundation-funded, and internationally supported projects. Much of his funding portfolio has been built through long-term collaborative research teams, including multi-institutional and global partnerships. His experience spans writing and reviewing for NIH, USDA, and international funding mechanisms (NHMRC, ESF), providing a practical perspective on how collaborative relationships can be leveraged to build durable and diversified research funding portfolios.
Presentation 2: Developing Fundable Grant Applications: Science, Art, and Serendipity
Speaker 2: Senlin Chen, PhD,
Bio: Senlin Chen, Ph.D., is a Professor of Kinesiology at LSU. His scholarship focuses on childhood obesity prevention, health behavior promotion, and behavioral and social determinants of health. His collaborative research has secured more than $5 million in external funding from agencies including the NIH, USDA, state governments, foundations, and professional organizations. Dr. Chen has regularly served as a grant reviewer for NIH study sections and the Hong Kong Research Grants Council. He has also contributed to several flagship research journals (e.g., RQES, JTPE, PESP, MPEES, JSHS) as a Guest or Associate eEditor. He currently serves as Director of Faculty Affairs in the College of Human Sciences and Education at LSU.
