Songning Zhang Inducted as Fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology

Professor Songning Zhang, co-director of the Biomechanics/Sports Medicine Lab in the Department, was inducted as a fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology (NAK) at the annual meeting of NAK, held in Minneapolis, September 26 – 29, 2024. His research focusing on the biomechanics of gait and cycling, in patients with total knee arthroplasty and osteoarthritis. His work also extends to the biomechanical analysis of sports surfaces, athletic footwear, and the application of musculoskeletal simulation for clinical purposes. His studies have greatly advanced our understanding of knee joint issues, contributing significantly to clinical applications in these areas. He has 98 peer-reviewed articles, 2 book chapters, 18 technical reports and more than 185 presentations.

Zhang is a founding editorial board member and associate editor of the Journal of Sport and Health Science, a guest editor of a special issue for Bioengineering, and holds editorial positions in several other journals. He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a founding member of the Cycling Research Network. At UTK, he has held influential roles such as the program coordinator for Kinesiology and the founding director of the Biomechanics/Sports Medicine Lab. Dr. Zhang’s leadership and scholarship have made a substantial impact in the field of kinesiology.
