Bailey Graduate School of Education was honored to host Richard Milner, IV (also known as Rich) as the distinguished lecturer for this year&#8217;s event held Tuesday, October 15 at the Holiday Inn, World&#8217;s Fair Park in the Grand Pavilion Ballroom. Attendance for the event included faculty, staff, students, and guests from the field of education.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/gse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/milner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1617\" src=\"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/gse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/milner.jpg\" alt=\"Richard Milner, IV, Billie Grace Goodrich Lecturer 2019\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/gse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/milner.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/gse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/milner-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Milner is the Cornelius Vanderbilt Endowed Chair of Education and a Professor of Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. He has secondary appointments as Professor of Sociology and Professor of Leadership, Policy, and Organizations at Vanderbilt. His research, teaching and policy interests concern urban teacher education, African American literature, and the social context of education. In particular, Professor Milner&#8217;s research examines practices and policies that support teacher effectiveness in urban schools.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last 18 years, he has worked closely with schools and districts to help close opportunity gaps.\u00a0 His research has appeared in numerous journals.\u00a0 He has published seven books, including the widely read, <i>Start Where You Are, but Don&#8217;t Stay There: Understanding Diversity, Opportunity Gaps and Teaching in Today&#8217;s Classrooms<\/i> (2010, Harvard Education Press), and <i>Rac(e)ing to Class: Confronting Poverty and Race in Schools and Classrooms<\/i> (2015, Harvard Education Press).\u00a0 In 2016, he became a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association.\u00a0 Currently, he is Editor-in-chief of <i>Urban Education<\/i> and co-editor of the <i>Handbook of Urban Education<\/i> (2014, Routledge Press).<a href=\"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/gse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/Milner-group.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"247\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1633\" src=\"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/gse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/Milner-group-300x247.jpg\" alt=\"RIchard Milner, IV, David Cihak &amp; Jeff Fairbrother\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/gse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/Milner-group-300x247.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/gse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/Milner-group.jpg 404w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you were unable to attend, you may enjoy <a href=\"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/gse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/PDF.KeynoteKnoxville.Milner-compressed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Milner&#8217;s presentation here<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/gse\/richard-milners-books-for-sale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">His books are also available for online purchase through Amazon.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The David T.
