We also were able to spend time with him at the wonderful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsu.edu\/coe\/child\/programs\/conference\/\">summer conference<\/a> our neighbors at East Tennessee State University hosts each year. Our team was instantly drawn to his energy and enthusiasm for the profession we share and think ELI participants will connect with his ideas about documentation, knowledge of Reggio Emilia, and his vast experience in the early education field. We are thrilled to welcome him to Knoxville and are looking forward to his talk and breakout session at the ELI this June. Check out his bio below and get excited for our time together this summer!<\/p>\n<p><b>Will Parnell, EdD,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0is a professor in early childhood education, department chair of Curriculum and Instruction, and a pedagogical liaison to the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdx.edu\/helen-gordon-center\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Helen Gordon Child Development Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0at Portland State University. His specialty areas are rethinking readiness, disrupting traditional early childhood research, creating learning designs, and documenting and making young children&#8217;s learning visible. Dr. Parnell currently serves as president-elect of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naecte.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Education&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0board, a board member for<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/renaissanceschoolportland.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0A Renaissance School of Arts and Sciences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, committee member of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.receinternational.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reconceptualizing Early Childhood Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0program, and president of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.portlandchildren.org\/?reqp=1&amp;reqr=\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inventing Remida Portland<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Parnell finished his doctorate in education at PSU in 2005, and has been researching Reggio-inspired practices related to making listening and learning visible and valued, and working with children&#8217;s creative expression, representational work and Remida creative reuse materials. His most recent research includes a phenomenological arts-based methodology\u2014a\/r\/tography\u2014as a way to make meaning of action research in early childhood education classrooms. Dr. Parnell has presented on and written many journal articles and book chapters about his research. He has co-edited and authored three books:\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Meaning-Making-in-Early-Childhood-Research-Pedagogies-and-the-Personal\/Iorio-Parnell-Yelland\/p\/book\/9781138238527\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Making Meaning in Early Childhood Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Disrupting-Early-Childhood-Education-Research-Imagining-New-Possibilities\/Parnell-Iorio\/p\/book\/9781138839113\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Disrupting Research in Early Childhood Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.palgrave.com\/us\/book\/9781137485113\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rethinking Readiness in Early Childhood Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. His\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/pdx.edu\/parnellw\/home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">other scholarly research articles and book chapters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0focus on children, teachers, and parents&#8217; lived experiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Parnell has been in the early education field since 1986 with a significant background in teaching and leadership\u00a0ranging from work in lab schools, parent cooperatives, and public-school settings.
