{"id":1339,"date":"2014-11-18T16:22:57","date_gmt":"2014-11-18T20:22:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cls.utwebteam.wpengine.com\/?p=1043"},"modified":"2024-07-17T15:11:14","modified_gmt":"2024-07-17T15:11:14","slug":"give-to-volstarter-for-tn-numeracy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/clee\/give-to-volstarter-for-tn-numeracy\/","title":{"rendered":"GIVE to VOLstarter for TN Numeracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/volstarter.utk.edu\/features\/ledger\/viewapp.asp?source=BrowseRequest&amp;mode=upd&amp;rp=l&amp;id=297834\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1045 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/clee\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/11\/CLEETNVolstarter-300x142.jpg\" alt=\"CLEETNVolstarter\" width=\"300\" height=\"142\" \/><\/a><strong>CLEE is happy to announce our new <a title=\"Volstarter Campaign CLEE\" href=\"https:\/\/volstarter.utk.edu\/features\/ledger\/viewapp.asp?source=BrowseRequest&amp;mode=upd&amp;rp=l&amp;id=297834\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VOLstarter campaign<\/a>, <\/strong>designed to <em>crowdsource<\/em> support for\u00a0adult literacy initiatives in\u00a0Tennessee.\u00a0\u00a0VOLstarter makes it easy to\u00a0contribute online\u00a0to\u00a0a project\u00a0 &#8211; any amount, large or small!<\/p>\n<p>In partnership with the <a href=\"http:\/\/tnliteracy.org\/\">Tennessee Literacy Coalition<\/a>,\u00a0we are currently\u00a0seeking your support to enhance <strong>math literacy for Tennessee adults<\/strong> &#8211; through\u00a0the expert online training of instructors and volunteers.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><a title=\"Volstarter donation page for CLEE\" href=\"https:\/\/volstarter.utk.edu\/features\/ledger\/viewapp.asp?source=BrowseRequest&amp;mode=upd&amp;rp=l&amp;id=297834\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Be the first to donate &#8211; help Tennessee!<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>What is Math Literacy?<\/strong><br \/>\nMath Literacy (or numeracy) is defined as <em>\u201cThe ability to problem-solve, reason and analyze information.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 Last fall, a highly recognized international survey of adult skills, commonly called <a title=\"Huffington Post report on PIAAC and Numeracy skills\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/10\/08\/oecd-skills-test_n_4061097.html%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the PIAAC report<\/a>, found that, <em>\u201c\u2026American adults lag behind their counterparts in other developed countries in mathematical and technical skills needed for a modern workplace.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To address this problem, the <strong>Math Literacy project<\/strong> would provide <strong>online training in numeracy instruction\u00a0to instructors and volunteers<\/strong> in\u00a0community funded programs throughout TN.\u00a0With enough donations, we also hope involving at least 5 UT students\u00a0in a\u00a0<strong>pilot a program of \u201conline tutoring\u201d for lower-skilled adults.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>100%\u00a0of the money you <a title=\"CLEE Volstarter page - donate now\" href=\"https:\/\/volstarter.utk.edu\/features\/ledger\/viewapp.asp?source=BrowseRequest&amp;mode=upd&amp;rp=l&amp;id=297834\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">donate through our page\u00a0on VOLstarter <\/a>will go straight to support\u00a0Tennessee literacy and CLEE\u2019s mission to address the lifelong learning needs of all Tennesseans!<\/p>\n<p><strong>How else can I help?<\/strong><br \/>\nPlease\u00a0share information about this project your community and social network &#8211; the more donations, the closer\u00a0our project is to reaching its funding goal.
