{"id":1116,"date":"2016-10-26T11:45:52","date_gmt":"2016-10-26T15:45:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ceems.utwebteam.wpengine.com\/?p=1116"},"modified":"2016-10-26T11:45:52","modified_gmt":"2016-10-26T15:45:52","slug":"high-school-math-professional-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/ceems\/2016\/10\/high-school-math-professional-development\/","title":{"rendered":"High School Math Professional Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1117 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/ceems.utwebteam.wpengine.com\/files\/2016\/10\/IMG_3141-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"img_3141\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>At a professional development this month, high school math teachers from Campbell County (TN), and surrounding districts, met with TPTE graduate students Ashley Walther and Michael Lawson to talk about STEM, modeling,\u00a0and formative assessment in the classroom. \u00a0This session is a follow up to the Improving Teacher Quality (ITQ) grant funded STEM and Math Modeling Institute this past summer.<\/p>\n<p>Did you know that paper can be used to make batteries, blu-ray discs, and even a house? \u00a0The amazing utility of paper is what guided our teachers through a STEM modeling challenge, where teachers focused on\u00a0using their\u00a0knowledge of polygons and engineering to construct a table out of newspaper tubes. \u00a0The table had to be at least 8 inches tall and able to\u00a0hold a heavy book. \u00a0Teachers worked in groups (as students would) to create their tables, and a competition of whose table could hold up the book the longest was conducted after the group work time. \u00a0Finally, we discussed the math content and practices embedded in the activity, how students might experience the activity, and any modifications we might make to the activity to fit particular students or groups of students.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1118 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/ceems.utwebteam.wpengine.com\/files\/2016\/10\/IMG_3138-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"img_3138\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This group engineering challenge lead to a discussion on formative assessment. \u00a0Teachers began by discussing the idea of formative assessment, how they currently use formative assessment, and how they would formatively assess the engineering challenge. \u00a0We then went on to discuss specific research-based formative assessment strategies that aim to understand student thinking. \u00a0Teachers concluded the session by planning formative assessments for their classroom.<\/p>\n<p>We look forward to continuing our work with these teachers in two more sessions this Fall and Spring, and into the summer and following school year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; At a professional development this month, high school math teachers from Campbell County (TN), and surrounding districts, met with [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1116","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
