{"id":1098,"date":"2016-08-22T13:31:12","date_gmt":"2016-08-22T17:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ceems.utwebteam.wpengine.com\/?p=1098"},"modified":"2016-08-22T13:31:12","modified_gmt":"2016-08-22T17:31:12","slug":"nimbios-works-with-math-counts-projects-to-teach-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cehhs.utk.edu\/ceems\/2016\/08\/nimbios-works-with-math-counts-projects-to-teach-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"NIMBioS Works with Math Counts Projects to Teach Teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tTennessee math teachers went back to the classroom\u00a0this month\u00a0to learn creative and engaging ways to connect mathematics with biology, led by the NIMBioS Education and\u00a0Outreach team.<\/p>\n<p>NIMBioS Associate Director for Education and Outreach Suzanne Lenhart, Education and Outreach Coordinator Kelly Sturner, and undergraduate\u00a0intern\u00a0Virginia Parkman traveled to Jacksboro Middle School in Campbell County, TN, yesterday to lead a one-day workshop for 23 area elementary and middle-school math teachers. The workshop was\u00a0part of a longer Tennessee Department of Education \u201cMath Counts II\u201d Workshop.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2792\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<div id=\"attachment_2792\" style=\"width: 387px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nimbios.org\/wordpress\/2016\/06\/23\/nimbios-teaches-the-teachers\/img_4868\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2792\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2792\" class=\"wp-image-2792\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nimbios.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_4868-300x190.jpg\" width=\"377\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2792\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In this lesson, teachers use array-thinking to design the placement of cages in animal shelters.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<p>The NIMBioS team\u00a0organized and presented interactive applications of math for grades 3-8, covering modeling, measurement and applications of geometry and array-thinking. Grades 3-5 teachers designed how cages might be arranged in different arrays in an animal shelter to minimize the spread of canine distemper virus. Grades 6-8 teachers learned how Alexander\u2019s Formula is used to model how fast dinosaurs could move based on their stride length, determined from fossilized footprints, and based on their hip height, determined from fossilized bones. The teachers then took on the role of pretending to be bipedal dinosaurs and performed trials by running outside and measuring hip heights. They compared their data to what Alexander\u2019s formula would predict.<\/p>\n<p>In early June, Lenhart and Sturner traveled to Campbell County High School in Jacksboro, TN, for two days as a part of a longer\u00a0workshop for high school math teachers called \u201cConnecting Math and STEM Through Modeling.\u201d Seventeen math teachers from Campbell County and surrounding counties participated in exercises designed to improve teachers\u2019\u00a0understanding of math modeling in the real world. Using resources from <a href=\"https:\/\/m3challenge.siam.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moody\u2019s Mega Math Challenge<\/a>, Lenhart and Sturner presented the steps involved in\u00a0using real-world data to generate\u00a0a modeling equation.
