Program overview

The STEM Leadership Graduate Certificate, offered through the Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education, prepares graduate students to lead STEM education reform in schools and districts. Through 12 credit hours of coursework, students build the capacity to identify problems of practice, apply evidence-based research to develop solutions, and design, implement, and evaluate teacher professional development initiatives. The program strengthens pedagogical content knowledge across STEM disciplines, data science and statistical skills, and grant writing ability through an applied capstone project. Students also gain experience designing and evaluating online professional development programs in STEM.

Available at the Knoxville campus and through distance education, the certificate can be pursued as an add-on to an existing degree or as a stand-alone credential. Coursework includes three required courses and one elective, culminating in a capstone project. Applicants may already be admitted to a UTK degree program or apply directly through the Graduate Admissions Office.
