Program overview

The Graduate Certificate in Social Justice Education, offered through Theory and Practice in Teacher Education at UT, helps graduate students build skills for working with diverse and minority populations through diversity, equity, and inclusion principles. It lets students bundle relevant coursework from their existing programs into a credential employers can easily recognize.

Available as an add-on or stand-alone (for those with a terminal degree) certificate, applicants must already be admitted to a graduate program or hold a terminal degree, applying through Graduate Admissions. The certificate requires 12 credit hours across four courses: Issues in Cultural Studies, Multicultural Education, Social Justice and Education, and Advanced Sociology of Education, with a minimum 3.50 GPA. All coursework must be completed at UT within five years of application. Completion requires submitting a Course Verification Form and applying to graduate through MyUTK.
