CEHHS Deaf Studies Professor Wins Fulbright Scholar Award

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, College of Education, Health & Human Sciences is pleased to announce that Kimberly Wolbers, co-director of Undergraduate Studies and professor of Deaf Studies in the Department of Theory & Practice in Teacher Education, has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award for the 2022-2023 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

This Fulbright Scholar Award will support teaching activities over a 10-month period with the Centre for Deaf Studies (CFDS) at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, South Africa. The CFDS, recognized in Africa as a leading Centre in Deaf Studies, is a vibrant deaf epicenter. Its mission is to foster equal opportunities for the deaf through multilingual, multicultural, and equity minded teacher education.

The Deaf Education programs at CFDS have doubled in size over the last five years, and community outreach efforts span 46 schools for the deaf across South Africa. CFDS faculty members have invited Wolbers’ involvement with advising postgraduate students’ research, offering professional development to community schools, and teaching two courses on Writing and Language Instruction for Deaf Students.

Wolbers is one of over 800 U.S. citizens who will conduct research and/or teach abroad for the 2022-2023 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program and is supported by the people of the United States and partner countries around the world.

Fulbrighters engage in cutting-edge research and expand their professional networks, often continuing research collaborations started abroad and laying the groundwork for forging future partnerships between institutions.
