Statement from the Dean

A Snapchat photo currently circulating on social media includes individuals thought to be UT students in blackface. Neither the image, nor the caption, are representative of the college or of UT. The College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences values diversity and similarity among our students, staff, and faculty. We value people of all races, creeds, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical ability, and socioeconomic groups.  We value and foster a culture and climate respectful and appreciative of all members of the community.

Diversity and inclusion are central to our mission of developing, encouraging, and preparing innovative leaders who influence, improve, and inspire a healthy, educated, civil, and vibrant society.

The Office of the Dean of Students and the BIAS Education Response Team have been notified. The university is determining how to handle the incident moving forward.

Bob Rider, Dean, College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences
