Nutrition Department Part of New $1 Million Grant to Fight Childhood Obesity

The College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences’ (CEHHS) Department of Nutrition is part of team receiving a $1 million grant to prevent childhood obesity.  The grant will be used to create a Regional Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Center of Excellence to strengthen Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program Education (SNAP-Ed) and Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) educational programming for low-income children and  families.  The UT Institute of Agriculture and CEHHS’s Department of Nutrition will work toward solving our state and nation’s obesity problem through outreach efforts with this grant funding.  Statistics show that one of every three children in Tennessee is overweight, and more than 20 percent of our children are obese. The obesity links to poor childhood health and academic performance.
