College Ranking Moves Up Seven PlacesA significant jump in ranking in the U.S. News and World
Report’s graduate school rankings was one of CEHHS’s
greatest points of pride this year. The college moved from a ranking
of 40th nationally last year to 33rd this year. “To move up seven
slots in this very competitive process is quite incredible,” said
CEHHS Dean Bob Rider. The college has moved up in ranking almost every
year for the past several years, and the goal is to continue to improve
the ranking. |
Faculty Help Lead National and International OrganizationsCEHHS faculty members are recognized leaders within several national and international professional organizations. Dick Allington of the Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education was recently elected president of the 90,000-member International Reading Association, and Craig Wrisberg is president of the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology. |
College Faculty Are Active as Professional Journal EditorsMore than a dozen faculty members are actively engaged with national professional journals in their individual fields, serving as editors and co-editors of such diverse publications as Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment (Steve McCallum), Health and Fitness Journal (Edward Howley), Adult Learning (Ralph G. Brockett), and Journal of Culinary Science and Technology (John Antun). |
Nutrition Head Serves on Tennessee Institute for Public Health CommitteeDr. Jay Whelan, professor and head of the Department of Nutrition, has been part of the Tennessee Department of Health’s task force responsible for the formation of the statewide Tennessee Institute for Public Health. The mission of the institute is to improve the health of Tennesseans and their communities by facilitating and promoting public health education, research, practice, and policy analysis through collaborative efforts among higher education, public and private health organizations and the Tennessee Department of Health. This soon-to-be freestanding, non-profit organization has received the endorsement from the National Network of Institutes of Public Health and full support from the Commissioner's office of the Tennessee Department of Health. |
Doctoral Graduate Wins National Award for Outstanding DissertationNissa Dahlin-Brown, who recently received her doctorate from CEHHS’s higher education program, has won the Beeman Award for Outstanding Dissertation. The Beeman award is sponsored and administered by the Council for the Advancement of Education (CASE), which is the Washington-based association of university advancement and fund-raising professionals. Dr. Grady Bogue chaired Nissa’s dissertation study, “The Impact of U. S. News and World Report Rankings on MBA programs at Eight Public Institutions.” The Beeman Award is one of CASE’s Research Writing Awards, which are given annually. The 2005 awards were announced on July 16 during the CASE Annual Assembly. Dr. Dahlin-Brown, who currently serves as assistant director of the Baker Center at UT, recently received notice that a journal piece based on her study was accepted by a national refereed journal. |
Charleen DeRidder Wins National Math Association AwardThe 2005 recipient of the Glenn Gilbert National Leadership Award was CEHHS graduate Dr. Charleen DeRidder. The Glenn Gilbert National Leadership Award was established to provide the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) with a vehicle for annually recognizing a person who has made a unique and dedicated contribution to mathematics education. Dr. DeRidder’s nomination cited her long career as mathematics coordinator of the Knox County Public Schools, her leadership in establishing the Smoky Mountain Mathematics Educators Association, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and her work in supporting mathematics teachers in the classroom at every level through her concept of “traveling mathematics teachers.” |
Michael Zemel Honored in ChicagoOn April 21, 2005, Dr. Michael Zemel of the College’s Department of Nutrition was honored by the University of Chicago Committee on Molecular Metabolism and Nutrition and the Chicago Nutrition Association with the twenty-third annual Lydia J. Roberts Memorial Lecture award. |
