From the Dean
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the inaugural edition of Year in Review, the annual magazine of the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences. This has indeed been a wonderful year of recognitions and accomplishments for our students, faculty, staff, and college as a whole. You will read about new initiatives developed and implemented by our outstanding faculty, stories of how our college is contributing to the well-being of our society, and news concerning the most important constituents we serve—our students.
In my first year as dean of the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, I have come to recognize the greatness perpetuated by many of you reading this message, as well as the significant contributions made by our students, faculty, and staff. It would take an entire book to list and describe these accomplishments, so what I will do is describe how they have given distinction to this new and most exciting college. The 2005 U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Graduate Schools” edition ranks the University of Tennessee College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences as the 33rd best graduate program in our area in the United States. This is a remarkable achievement, given that we moved up seven places from our rank of 40th from last year’s report. This outstanding recognition is due primarily to the outstanding work of our faculty, made possible in part by the support they receive from our very dedicated and committed staff. In the end, it is our students who benefit from the hard work that went into elevating our national and international status. The students are, and will always be, the focus of our attention.
This success has also been made possible by the support that we receive from our distinguished alumni and friends of the college. It is through your gifts and encouragement that much of the good work portrayed in this magazine has been made possible. We truly have the opportunity to be “difference-makers” in the global community and I sincerely hope you will help us to achieve this important goal.
I look forward to many more messages of this type. I welcome any and all responses, inquiries, and suggestions regarding the activities discussed in this journal and others currently underway in our college. I hope you will take the time to read every article and item of news contained herein. I look forward to the opportunity to meet with you personally or engage in communication through other means.
On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, I would once again like to express by gratitude to you for your support of our teaching, research, and service initiatives. Thank you and happy reading!
