Contributors Provide Support for Students, Faculty, and Programs
Each year the students, faculty, alumni, corporate partners, employees, and friends of the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences give of their resources to enhance the quality of programs they believe in and to enable as many students as possible to receive an affordable, quality education. Private giving exceeded $3 million in fiscal year 2004, strengthening endowments, funding research, enriching fundamental programs, and providing $595,435 in scholarships.
Many donors to the college contributed to funds that can be used “where the need is greatest.” Some designated the use of their gifts for programs or scholarship funds of a very specific nature. Others provided funding to achieve a personal vision for the college. Two of the more significant gifts in the past year were from David Bailey and Sylvia and Bill Moore.
David T. Bailey—Top Teachers for Tennessee
Knoxville businessman David T. Bailey chose to invest in the future of Tennessee by making a million-dollar commitment to the teacher intern program and challenging others to invest in it through the Top Teachers for Tennessee Scholarship fund. “I recognize the multiplier effect of hundreds and hundreds of students whose lives are touched in significant ways by an effective, inspiring teacher,” said Mr. Bailey. Other contributors have agreed. Sixty-seven teacher interns will receive scholarships in the next academic year as a result of the Bailey challenge. The awards will ease the financial burden of their year-long internship, allowing them to devote their time to the experience and to avoid heavy indebtedness as they embark on their careers. The need for excellent teachers is nationwide. The Top Teachers fund is helping to meet this need in Tennessee.
Sylvia and Bill Moore—Child and Family
Advocacy Fund
Students and faculty in the Department of Child and Family Studies shared exciting research with their professional colleagues at national and international meetings this year with support from the Child and Family Advocacy Fund. Their work brought the department the greater recognition and enhanced reputation for excellence that Sylvia and Bill Moore intended in creating the fund.

Sixty-seven teacher interns will be assisted this year through the generosity of David T. Bailey and contributors to Top Teachers for Tennessee.
Faculty-student research and projects included the effect of violence on youth; family behavior patterns underlying healthy emotional and social development in children; injury prevention and school safety; and implications of brain research for young children’s development. The Moores’ gift supports the dissemination of research that can directly benefit families and nurtures the department’s reputation for excellence.
Giving on any level is valuable. Annual gifts of modest amounts are the backbone of private giving in our college and continue to meet needs as donors increase their giving levels and new donors join them. Special gifts have significant impact on existing programs, create new opportunities for faculty and students, and allow the college to fulfill its mission.
