The College of Education, Health and Human Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, the State’s land-grant and flagship research institution, designates academic outreach and engagement using the following definition:
Community engagement is a form of collaboration that cuts across instruction, research, scholarship and service between institutions of higher learning and their larger communities (local, regional, state, national, global) for the mutually
beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources consistent with the university and its mission.
