Center for Sport, Peace, and Society Inspires A Better Life

Melissa Farquharson graduates Thursday, May 12, with her master’s degree in Sport Management through the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation and Sports Studies but it was a tough road to get there.  Growing up in Jamaica, her love of sports and her own ambition and avid supporters led her to find a way to use her passion.  Fast forward four years to when UT’s Center for Sport, Peace, and Society in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences partnered with the US Department of State and espnW and established the Empowering Women and Girls through Sports initiative.  Through this program, Farquharson became involved in the Global Sports Mentorship program and her hard work and dedication brought her to this day.

Enjoy this article featured in Tennessee Today about Farquharson and the journey which led her to UT.  Farquharson hopes to take her experience and find a job coaching or officiating basketball and to return to Jamaica to help other kids realize their dream just as she had the opportunity to do.
