"Book Buddies" Program Encourages Summer Reading

UT student teachers and writers through the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences are paired up with children who may not have a parent to read with at home in the “Book Buddies” program.  The young adult literature course is in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club and is through the Theory and Practice in Teacher Education program at the University of Tennessee.  It is made possible by the generous donations from Moll and Charlie Anderson, the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, and the Center for Children’s and Young Adult Literature.

The mission of the program is to encourage excitement in children about summer reading, lower the level of what educators call “summer setback,” and increase retention in reading skills.    View the WATE-TV 6 interview featuring Dr. Susan Groenke and more learn more about the Book Buddies program.
